How I Stay Disciplined During Colder Months

I don’t know about you, but once the temperatures drop and it starts getting dark way too early, my motivation definitely takes a hit. Over the years, I’ve learned that I can’t just wait to feel motivated again and I need to make a little more effort to keep my usual routine going. These are some of my tips and tricks that help me stay on track even through the coldest and darkest months of the year.

Build a routine that works all year

For me, the easiest way to stay disciplined in winter is to have a routine that doesn’t completely change when the seasons do. The only time when I change up things in my routine is during fashion week when I am traveling non-stop. I try to make these workouts and a morning routine part of my everyday life, regardless of the season, so when winter comes it doesn’t feel like a complete reset.

Build A Routine

Work out even when you don’t feel like it

This one is easier said than done, but it really makes a difference, especially during dull winter days. There will definitely be days when I don’t feel like working out, especially when it’s cold and dark outside, but I almost always feel better once I do it.

Make yourself leave the house

When it’s cold outside, it’s very easy to spend days locked up in your house, especially if you work from home the majority of time. Even if I only have time for a short walk, a coffee run or a quick trip to the shops, getting outside is something I make sure I do every day and makes me feel so much better. I think this is especially important when the days are short and you spend all the time indoors, so go out, even if it is just taking a stroll around your neighborhood.

Get Outside

Get dressed even if you’re staying home

This sounds like a very small thing, but it genuinely helps me get into the right mindset. If I know I’m going to be working from home all day, it’s very tempting to stay in pyjamas until noon. I don’t mean putting on a full outfit just to sit at your desk. But changing out of your sleepwear, doing your skincare, getting ready and putting on something you actually feel good in creates that little mental separation between “I’m having a lazy day” and “I’m starting my day.”

Get Dressed

Plan your week instead of taking every day as it comes

I find that I’m much more productive when I have some idea of what my week will look like. At the beginning of the week, I like to think about the things I actually need to get done, any workouts, events, plans I have and even a few things I’m looking forward to. That way, when Wednesday comes around and it’s freezing outside, I’m not sitting there wondering what I’m supposed to be doing with myself because I already have a brief schedule.
